Technique Analysis

• Textured Sgraffito and Canvas Tooth: Carlisle expertly utilizes the physical "tooth" of the substrate, allowing the underlying texture to break through the pastel layers. He heavily incorporates scumbling and fine sgraffito (scratching into the oil pastel), particularly noticeable in the sky and water, to create a sense of vibrating movement and light refraction.
• Expressionist Color Palette: The artist shifts away from realistic landscape tones in favor of heightened, emotional color choices. The mountains pulse with rich lavenders, deep magentas, and electric violets, contrasted beautifully against the neon greens of the valley and the intense turquoise, cerulean, and soft pinks shimmering in the lake.
