This striking artwork is titled Amiri by Stephen Carlisle, a queer expressionist artist based in Denver, Colorado.

The portrait showcases Carlisle's distinct expressionist style, combining highly saturated, contrasting color blocks—such as deep purples, vivid magentas, and radiant yellows—with a highly textured, metallic gold  background to draw emphasis to the subject.

The figure, Amiri, is adorned with intricate, multi-layered colorful patterned necklaces and a detailed matching headband reminiscent of traditional African royal garments or Maasai-style beadwork.

Amiri represents a bold fusion of Expressionism and portraiture, showcasing Carlisle's frequent challenges to medium limitations through highly saturated color.

Oil pastels are notoriously difficult to control on canvas due to their heavy blendability. The artist demonstrates excellent structural precision, maintaining sharp, distinct edges on geometric patterns—such as the intricate, repetitive lines in the multi-layered bead necklaces and the headband—without muddying the colors.

Rather than using traditional gradients, the artist maps physical dimension using localized blocks of contrasting temperature. Brilliant yellow and pure white highlights emphasize the bridge of the nose and the lower lip, while deep violets and cool magentas structure the jawline, creating an impactful three-dimensional illusion.

The background leverages a heavily textured, stippled application of metallic gold, creating a brilliant contrast between the flat, matte quality of the pastels and the light-reflective surface behind the subject.

Mood & Emotional Resonance

Regal & Statuesque: The direct, forward-facing frontal gaze gives the subject a monumental, timeless presence. The posture combined with the gold leaf backdrop evokes traditional religious icon painting or classical royal portraiture.

Serene Intensity: Despite the high-vibration color palette, the subject’s soft expression, gentle configuration of the eyes, and closed lips emit a sense of profound calm, inner peace, and psychological depth.
