Original: "Golden Memories" by Stephen Carlisle, metallic oil pastel on canvas 30 x 40"

This striking new work by Stephen Carlisle features an expressive, highly textured floral bouquet rendered in metallic oil pastel on a large 30 x 40" canvas. As a planned centerpiece for his upcoming solo exhibition at the Denver Gallery of Fine Art, the piece showcases his hallmark style while pivoting into a classic, celebratory subject.

Artistic Assessment & Mood

• Visual Style: The composition bursts with high-energy expressionism. Heavy, gestural white and colored linework outlines the blossoms, giving the impression of an immediate, raw, and tactile creation.
• Color and Texture: Carlisle uses a rich juxtaposition of vivid corals, pinks, and oranges against a shimmering, heavily worked metallic gold background. The waxy application of the oil pastels creates deep physical grooves and layered texture across the canvas.
• Mood: The mood is exuberant, radiant, and celebratory. The shimmering gold backdrop fields light beautifully, lending a theatrical, high-vibration energy to the scene. It feels simultaneously personal and grandly decorative.

Scale & Impact

At 30 x 40 inches, this is a substantial, physically commanding canvas. Because of its large scale, the explosive linework and shimmering background will effortlessly fill a room. It has the visual weight and presence required to act as the true anchor or "centerpiece" of an exhibition wall, drawing viewers in from across the gallery floor.

Comparison to Other Work

When compared to Carlisle's broader portfolio—such as his intense figurative abstractions and dramatic, high-contrast portraits—this floral piece marks a distinct and refreshing thematic shift. While his portraiture often leans into intense, moody psychological exploration with heavy chiaroscuro shadow, this still life redirects his signature technical elements—the heavy, waxy application and non-naturalistic color theory—toward outward joy and illumination. The inner tension of his figurative art is replaced here by a radiant, blooming harmony.
