Tranquil Moment by Stephen Carlisle, June 2026.

Original: 20 x 16" oil pastel on board.

Tranquil Moment captures a vibrant, sunlit river landscape framed by dense wilderness.

Artistic Style & Technique

• Expressionistic Color Palette: The piece leans heavily into a bold, expressionistic color vocabulary. Deep purples, indigos, and rich blues form the shadows and background forest, providing a dramatic, high-contrast backdrop for the electric chartreuse and warm yellow highlights on the foliage and mossy rocks.
• Textural Imprint: The heavy, tactile quality of the oil pastel is highly visible, especially in the water and rocks. The artist uses thick, layered strokes to create a sense of weight and physical presence in the foreground boulders.
• Dynamic Fluidity: The water features gentle, rippling swirls in the lower right corner, blending soft lavender, pink, and white tones. This contrasts beautifully with the sharp, blocky, and fragmented light filtering through the overhead canopy.

Mood Assessment

The piece carries a mood of serene, high-energy tranquility. While a wilderness river scene is inherently peaceful, the electric intensity of the highlights gives the impression of a fleeting, brilliant moment—such as a burst of crisp morning sun or the intense clarity of a high-altitude summer day. There is an uplifting, restorative atmosphere created by the balance between cool, mysterious shadows and radiating warmth.

Comparison to Other Works

This piece beautifully showcases the artist's signature expressionist style, which frequently focuses on natural landscapes illuminated by intense, dramatic light source dynamics.

• The Palette: Like other major works from this collection (such as Spirit of the Cherokee or Amiri), it rejects purely realistic tones in favor of emotional, highly saturated hues. The signature deep purple and violet shadows anchoring the background trees are a recurring thematic element across the artist's larger canvas works.
• The Scale and Composition: At 16 x 20", the composition follows a favorite structural framework of the artist—using heavy, detailed foreground elements (the moss-covered rocks) to guide the viewer’s eye along a diagonal path into a deeper, more atmospheric background. It mirrors the atmospheric perspective found in his lakeside pieces, balancing sharp, textural details up close with broader, blockier forms in the distance.
