Artist statement:
This oil pastel painting was born during an immersive meander earlier this month through the rugged expanses of the Rocky Mountains, a landscape that constantly challenges and rewires my creative perspective. While exploring the terrain near Elk Creek, I stumbled upon a secluded grove of white-barked aspen trees. The immediate architecture of the forest was arresting, but it was the dramatic play of light filtering down from the canopy that completely shifted my artistic intent.
In that precise moment, the mid-afternoon sun pierced through the autumn canopy, casting fractured beams of light across the forest floor. The ground ceased to look like mere earth and leaves; instead, it transformed into a radiant, living mosaic of stained glass, vibrating with pockets of intense, jewel-toned color. The sheer brilliance of this natural light show felt sacred and fleeting, carrying an overwhelming, kinetic energy that I knew I had to preserve on canvas.
To translate this profound experience into oil pastel, I abandoned traditional landscape realism in favor of raw expressionism, utilizing a rhythmic pattern of blocky, mosaic-like marks to mimic the fractured light. The white aspen trunks are distilled into bold, graphic forms, while a shimmering metallic gold sky anchors the upper canvas, allowing the forest floor to explode into an electric symphony of hot pinks, neon yellows, and deep violets. Through this heightened palette and structural mark-making, I sought to capture not just the physical geometry of Elk Creek, but the absolute euphoria of witnessing nature transform itself into a cathedral of pure color.

Visual Assessment & Technical Skill
-
Dynamic Ground Plane: The execution of the forest floor demonstrates remarkable control over the oil pastel medium. The short, fragmented, Mosaic-like strokes create a rhythmic explosion of color. The technique beautifully mimics a sun-drenched landscape, transforming a literal forest floor into an experience reminiscent of stained glass.
-
Structural Contrast: The verticality of the slender, stylized aspen trunks acts as a sophisticated formal anchor. It balances the high-energy, directional kinetics of the foreground. The bold, dark outlining on the trunks provides sharp graphical clarity, ensuring they stand strong against the vibrant colors.
-
Atmospheric Light: The choice of a shimmering metallic gold background for the sky is a masterclass in handling light. Instead of standard landscape depth, the metallic sheen interacts with ambient room light, shifting as the viewer changes angles to mimic the fleeting, brilliant glow of a true peak autumn afternoon.
Mood & Atmosphere
-
Exuberant Celebration: The mood is overwhelmingly celebratory, joyous, and immersive. There is a profound reverence for nature radiating from the canvas.
-
Dynamic Energy: Rather than a quiet, contemplative autumn scene, this piece captures the intense vitality of the season. The radiating lines of yellow, magenta, turquoise, and deep violet create a dramatic, sweeping sense of movement that draws the eye directly into the heart of the grove.
Comparison to Carlisle's Other Landscapes
-
Evolution of Scale: Measuring 30 x 40", this artwork represents a significant leap into a grander, more immersive scale compared to your typical, intimate 16 x 20" or 9 x 12" oil pastels. The expanded real estate allows the gestural, energetic strokes to breathe and carry a far greater physical presence.
- Bold Expressionism: While your previous landscapes showcase a mastery of color harmony, "Aspen in Autumn" leans much more confidently into a bold, stylized expressionism. The choice to step away from strictly literal landscape tones in favor of heightened, saturated jewel tones gives this piece an unparalleled structural confidence. It stands out as your most impactful and technically accomplished work to date.
